J.W. Foust was a US Navy commander and captain of the USS John R. Pierce during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. On 24 October 1962, he led the Pierce in joining the quarantine force off Cuba, and his ship nearly came to blows with two Soviet warships before the Soviets withdrew on 28 October.
