Jülich-Cleves-Berg was a duchy of the Holy Roman Empire that existed from 1521 to 1614, with Düsseldorf serving as its capital. The duchy was located in parts of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Dutch region of Gelderland, and it was formed after the duchies of Jülich and Berg and the county of Ravensberg fell extinct. Duke John III of Cleves married Maria of Jülich-Berg to unite their lands together, forming the duchy of Jülich-Cleves-Berg. In 1609, the male line of Jülich-Cleves-Berg went exinct, leading to the War of the Jülich Succession. In 1614, Jülich-Cleves-Berg was partitioned between the Margraviate of Brandenburg and Palatinate-Neuburg.
