Ivete Vargas

Ivete Vargas (17 July 1927 – 3 January 1984) was a Brazilian journalist and politician, the grandniece of President Getulio Vargas, and the founder of the revived Brazilian Labor Party.

Biography[]

Candida Ivete Vargas Martins was born in Sao Borja, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil on 17 July 1927; her grandfather was the brother of Getulio Vargas. In 1950, she was elected a Brazilian Labor Party federal deputy from Sao Paulo, and she became Brazil's ambassador to the United Nations in 1953. She was re-elected through to the 1966 elections, and she presided over the Sao Paulo PTB. In 1965, the PTB was outlawed by the military government, and Vargas joined the Brazilian Democratic Movement in 1969. In 1979, she refounded the PTB and became its National President in 1980, and she served as a deputy from 1983 to 1984, when she died of cancer at the age of 56.
