The Republican Party of Italy (PRI) is a liberal and social liberal political party in Italy that was founded on 21 April 1895. The party claimed descent from the political thought of Giuseppe Mazzini and Giuseppe Garibaldi, and the early PRI was known for its anti-clericalism, anti-monarchism, and, later, anti-fascism. During the second half of the 20th century, the PRI moved toward the center of the political spectrum, increasingly supported economic liberalism. The PRI's only prime minister was Giovanni Spadolini, who served from 1981 to 1982. After the Tangentopoli scandal of the 1990s and the subsequent end of the "First Republic" political order, the PRI was nearly destroyed, and it relied on alliances with other parties to survive.
