Israel Washburn Jr.

Israel Washburn Jr. (6 June 1813-12 May 1883) was a member of the US House of Representatives (W-ME 6) from 4 March 1851 to 3 March 1853 (succeeding Charles Stetson and preceding Thomas J.D. Fuller) and from ME-5 from 4 March 1853 to 1 January 1861 (succeeding Ephraim K. Smart and preceding Stephen Coburn), and the Republican Governor of Maine from 2 January 1861 to 7 January 1863 (succeeding Lot M. Morrill and preceding Abner Coburn).

Biography[]

Israel Washburn Jr. was born in Livermore, Maine in 1813, the brother of Elihu B. Washburne, Cadwallader C. Washburn, William D. Washburn, and Charles Ames Washburn. He served in the US House of Representatives from 1851 to 1861 and as Governor from 1861 to 1863, and he helped recruit soldiers for the Union Army during the American Civil War. He served as Collector of the Port of Portland from 1863 to 1877, and he died in 1883.
