Ascari monument

Monument at the Behesht Zahra Martyrs' Cemetery

Ismail Ascari (died 23 October 1983) was an Islamic Jihad Organization (IJO) fighter during the Lebanese Civil War and one of the two perpetrators of the 1983 Beirut barracks bombings. Ascari drove a hijacked 19-ton yellow Mercedes Benz stake bed truck into the Beirut International Airport, carrying explosives instead of the water that the US Marine Corps troops had been expecting. Ascari crashed through the main building's entryway and into the lobby, detonating his 21,000 pounds of TNT and killing 241 American servicemen as the four-story building collapsed into rubble.
