Flag of Isle of Man

The Isle of Man is a crown dependency of the United Kingdom, located in the Irish Sea; its capital is Douglas. The island was conquered by Edwin of Northumbria in 627 CE, and the Norse Vikings conquered the island from the Britons during the 9th century, establishing the Kingdom of the Isles. In 1266, Scotland conquered the island from Norway, and the rule of the island alternated between Scotland and England for several years. In 1399, the isle came under the feudal lordship of England, and the island became a formal part of the British crown in 1765. The Isle of Man became an internally self-governing crown dependency, meaning that it was not technically a part of the United Kingdom (as are England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland), but instead a British territory. In 2011, the Isle of Man had a population of 84,497 people.
