Isla de Muerta was a legendary island in the Caribbean which, according to pirate legend, could be found on no map during the Golden Age of Piracy. The island was used to stash the hoarde of Aztec gold seized by the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes during the Spanish conquest of the Americas, and the treasure attracted many buccaneers and adventurers, including Captain Jack Sparrow. In 1718, Hector Barbossa mutinied against Sparrow after discovering where the island was, and he and the crew of the Black Pearl seized its riches for themselves; according to legend, they were cursed with immortality (including the inability to taste or feel, and turning into skeletons when exposed to moonlight) after finding the stone chest filled with 882 gold pieces. In 1728, the island was the site of the Battle of Isla de Muerta, where the Royal Navy defeated Barbossa's crew, and Barbossa was killed by Sparrow. Sometime after the battle, the island was swallowed by the sea.
