Isezakicho

Isezakichō is a district of Naka Ward in Yokohama, Japan. In 1671, a swamp was transformed into arable land, which became home to the Minatozaki red-light district during the bakufu period. In 1874, Isezakichō - then called "Isesagichou" - was established as a town, and it was named for the donors Iseya, Sagawa, and Sasaki, who helped repair the district's roads. Isezakichō became an entertainment district with the opening of a box office in 1873 and a sumo wrestling venue in 1882. The district was severely damaged in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 before being quickly rebuilt. The neighborhood was requisitioned by Allied forces after World War II, during which Isezakichō was damaged by Allied bombing. Reconstruction began in earnest during the 1950s, and Isezakichō became home to the only large shopping area in Yokohama catering to local residents, maintaining this status until the 1960s, but still remaining a major shopping area.
