Isamu Yokoyama (1 March 1889 – 21 April 1952) was a Lieutenant-General of the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II.
Biography[]
Isamu Yokoyama was born on 1 March 1889 in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, the son of a colonel in the Imperial Japanese Army. He graduated from the Imperial Japanese Army Academy in December 1909 and from the Army Staff College in 1915, and he served as a military attache to the Weimar Republic before serving on the general staff of the Kwantung Army. In September 1939, as a Lieutenant-General, he led a division in Manchukuo, and he led the Japanese 11th Army during the Second Sino-Japanese War from 1942 to 1944. In November 1944, he was given command of the Japanese 16th Area Army, and he was based at Fukuoka; his objective was to prevent an American invasion of Japan. In July 1946, he was sentenced to death for his testing of scientific experiments on downed Allied airmen at Kyushu Imperial University, but he died in Sugamo Prison in 1952 before he could stand for retrial.
