Isabella of Portugal

Isabella of Portugal (24 October 1503-1 May 1539) was Holy Roman Empress from 24 February 1530 to 1 May 1539, succeeding Bianca Maria Sforza and preceding Maria of Spain.

Biography[]

Isabella of Portugal was born in Lisbon, Portugal on 24 October 1503, the daughter of Manuel I of Portugal and Maria of Aragon. Isabella became known as a beautiful and intelligent young woman who spoke Latin, Spanish, and French fluently, and she also had a vast and complete library and a large amount of wealth. She was sent to marry Emperor Charles V in 1526, and she served as regent for her husband during his absences from 1529 to 1532 and from 1535 to 1539. She died in Toledo, Spain in 1539 at the age of 35.
