Isabella of Armenia

Isabella of Armenia (27 January 1216-23 January 1252) was Queen of Armenian Cilicia from 1219 to 1226, succeeding Leo II and preceding Hethum I.

Biography[]

Isabella was born in 1216, the daughter of King Leo II of Armenia and Sybilla of Cyprus. On her father's death in 1219, she inherited the throne of Armenian Cilicia, and she was the favorite of the ruling Armenian nobles. However, Raymond-Roupen and John of Brienne contested her rule; John's Armenian wife died in 1220, ending his claim, while Raymond-Roupen was captured in 1222. Isabella first married Philip of Antioch in 1222, but he died at the start of 1225. Isabella then remarried to the noble son Hethum, who became King in 1219. She refused to live with him for many years, eventually relenting. She died in 1252.
