Isaac Tichenor (8 February 1754 – 11 December 1838) was a US Senator from Vermont from 18 October 1796 to 17 October 1797 (succeeding Moses Robinson and preceding Nathaniel Chipman) and from 4 March 1815 to 3 March 1821 (succeeding Jonathan Robinson and preceding Horatio Seymour), as well as Governor of Vermont from 16 October 1797 to 9 October 1807 (succeeding Paul Brigham and preceding Israel Smith) and from 14 October 1808 to 14 October 1809 (succeeding Israel Smith and preceding Jonas Galusha). He was a member of the Federalist Party.
Biography[]
Isaac Tichenor was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1754, and he studied law in Schenectady, New York before moving to Bennington, Vermont in 1777. He served as captain and commander of a Bennington militia company during the American Revolutionary War, and he served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1781 to 1784. From 1782 to 1789, he presented Vermont's admission to the United States, and he served as a justice on the Vermont Superior Court from 1791 to 1794 and as Chief Justice from 1795 to 1796. In 1796, he was appointed to fill Moses Robinson's unexpired term in the US Senate as a Federalist Party member, only to resign to serve as Governor of Vermont from 1797 to 1807. From 1808 to 1809, he he returned to serving as Governor, and he then served in the Senate from 1815 to 1821. He died in 1838.
