Isaac Morley

Isaac Morley (11 March 1786 – 24 June 1865) was First Counselor to the Bishop of the LDS Church from 3 June 1831 to 27 May 1840.

Biography[]

Isaac Morley was born in Montague, Massachusetts in 1786, and he settled in the town of Kirtland in the wilderness of northern Ohio, where he created a productive farm. Morley converted to the LDS Church in November 1830, and he was ordained an elder shortly after his baptism. On 3 June 1831, he became First Counselor to Edward Partridge, the Bishop of the Church, and he was forced to sell his farm and travel to Missouri as a missionary. In 1836, he helped establish the city of Far West, Missouri, and he was ordained as its Patriarch. In 1838, he was jailed for three weeks during a crackdown against the Mormons of Missouri by the state government. From 1849 to 1854, he led the Sanpete Mormon Colony, and he also became a member of the Council of Fifty. Morley died in Fairview, Sanpete County, Utah in 1865.
