
Isaac Johnson (1 November 1803-15 March 1853) was the Democratic Governor of Louisiana from 12 February 1846 to 28 January 1850, succeeding Alexandre Mouton and preceding Joseph Marshall Walker.
Biography[]
Isaac Johnson was born in St. Francisville, Louisiana in 1803, and he became a lawyer and Democratic politician. He served as a state legislator and judge before serving as Governor from 1846 to 1850 and as State Attorney General from 1850 to 1854, and he supported the Mexican-American War, advocated for the conquest of all of Mexico, staunchly supported states' rights and the expansion of slavery, established the University of Louisiana in 1847, and earned the ire of his party for appointing Whigs to public offices. He moved the state capitol to Baton Rouge in 1849, and he died in 1853.
