Isaac Harding Duval (1 September 1824 – 10 July 1902) was a Union Army Brigadier-General during the American Civil War and a member of the US House of Representatives (R-WV 1) from 1869 to 1871, succeeding Chester D. Hubbard and preceding John James Davis.
Biography[]
Isaac Harding Duval was born in Wellsburg, Brooke County, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1824, and he became a scout in the American West before joining the Gold Rush in 1849. He joined Narciso Lopez's failed filibuster expedition to Cuba before returning to Wellsburg in 1853 and working as a merchant. At the start of the American Civil War, he sided with the Union and became the colonel of a West Virginia regiment, and he was badly wounded in the thigh at the Battle of Opequon in September 1864. By the end of the war, he fought in 36 battles and commanded two divisions of VIII Corps, and he was mustered out of service on 15 January 1866. He went on to serve in the State Senate, in the US House of Representatives from 1869 to 1871, US Collector of Internal Revenue for the 1st District of West Virginia from 1872 to 1884, and a member of the State House from 1887 to 1889, and he died in 1902.
