Isa Munayev

Isa Munayev (20 May 1965-1 February 2015) was a commander of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria who commanded the Dudaev Battalion during the Ukrainian Civil War, fighting on Ukraine's side.

Biography[]

Isa Munayev was born on 20 May 1965 in the Chechen-Ingush ASSR of the Soviet Union, and he served as a police officer in Grozny. At the beginning of the Second Chechen War in 1999, he was appointed as the militant commandant of Grozny by President Aslan Maskhadov, and he organized ambushes, car bombs, and mine explosions against the Russian Army during the Battle of Grozny. In 2001, he was promoted to Brigadier-General, but in 2004 he was forced to leave Chechnya after he was wounded. In July 2014 he took over the "peacekeeping" Dudaev Battalion of Chechen volunteers in Ukraine, fighting alongside the government against Russia and their separatist allies. During the Ukrainian Civil War, he was killed in the Battle of Debaltseve on 1 February 2015 at the age of 49.
