The Irish Army is the military of Ireland, founded in February 1922 with the creation of the Irish Free State. The army's first war was the Irish Civil War, during which it fought against the Irish Republican Army insurgents. During the rest of the 20th century and at the start of the 21st century, the Irish Army took part in peacekeeping operations, including the Congo, Cyprus, the Sinai, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Eritrea, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo, East Timor, Liberia, Chad, and Syria. In May 2016, the army had 7,310 active soldiers.
