Ireland is a sovereign state in the British Isles located on the island of Ireland. It owns five-sixths of its island, with Northern Ireland being a territory of the United Kingdom. Ireland's population is spread across the island in various towns and cities spread around several fertile fields, with a third of the population living in the capital of Dublin. Ireland won its independence from the United Kingdom in 1922 in the Irish War of Independence after 800 years of being occupied by England, but the Irish Republican Army and other dissident groups in Northern Ireland have constantly fought for Northern Ireland's union with Ireland and secession from the United Kingdom. The country has a population of 4,635,400 people, with most being whites of Celtic descent. 84.2% are Catholic, 6.2% nonreligious, 4.6% Protestant, 1.1% Muslim, and 2.8% other groups.
