Iowa is a state in the Midwest region of the United States, with its capital at Des Moines. The state touches the Mississippi River to the east and the Missouri River to the west, and it used to be a part of French Louisiana (its state flag is patterned after the tricolor of France) before the USA acquired it in the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. On 28 December 1846, Iowa was admitted to the union as the 29th state, and it is currently the safest state in America. In 2015, it had a population of 3,123,899 people.
