The Ionian League was a confederation of twelve Ionian cities that existed from the mid-7th century BC to the 4th century BC. It was formed at the end of the Meliac War, with its member cities consisting of Miletus, Myus, Priene, Ephesus, Colophon, Lebedus, Teos, Clazomenae, Phocaea, Chios, Erythrae, and Samos. In 650 BC, Smyrna joined the league, and the league was dissolved and reconstituted several times. Its main purpose was to form an alliance against Persia, especially during the Greco-Persian Wars. It was ultimately incorporated into the Roman Empire.
