Iolcus is an ancient city in Thessaly, Greece. The city existed since antiquity, with King Aeson being usurped by his half-brother Pelias. In 1246 BC, Pelias sent Aeson's son Jason to look for the Golden Fleece in Colchis, hoping to keep Jason (a claimant to the throne) far away from him. Jason later returned to Iolcus with the fleece and a Colchian wife, Medea, and Medea had Pelias murdered by his own daughters when he refused to give the throne to Jason. Jason, as an accessory from the murder, was unable to succeed to the throne. In 294 BC, the people of Iolcus moved to the new city of Demetrias, ruining the city. Today, it is a village with a population of 2,138 people.
