International Brigades

The International Brigades were volunteer military units that served with the Second Spanish Republic's armed forces during the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939. 35,000 fighters from 35 nations flocked to the cause of republican Spain against the fascist Falange party and its Nazi and Italian allies; it is estimated that 30,000 were leftists from the United Kingdom, France, the United States, and Germany. The brigades attracted adventuers, socialists, communists, anarchists, and liberals, and the brigades became a legendary formation after the war's end.
