Interborough Rapid Transit Company

The Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) was the private operator of New York City's underground subway line from 1904 to 1940, when it was purchased by the city and merged with the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation and Independent Subway System systems to form the modern New York City Subway. The company was founded on 6 May 1902 by August Belmont Jr., and the first IRT subway ran from City Hall to 145th Street at Broadway starting on 27 October 1904. Today, the IRT lines are operated as the A Division of the Subway, while its remaining lines are underground in Manhattan. Its main lines in the Bronx are predominantly elevated, as is its Flushing Line in Queens.
