The Interahamwe was a Hutu paramilitary organization, founded in 1994. The militia was racist in ideology, committing genocide against the Tutsis after the Rwandan Civil War of 1990-1993 in the ensuing Rwandan Genocide of 1994, during which it killed over 1,000,000 people (around seven people each minute). The Interahamwe militia was motivated by Hutu Power Radio and other Hutu extremist sources, and the militia's members used both machetes (supplied to all civilians by the Hutu government in order to create a citizen militia) and guns to kill their enemies. After the civil war's end, the Interahamwe fled to Zaire (Democratic Republic of the Congo), where they gained support in Hutu refugee camps.
