The Insubres was a Gallic tribe which inhabited Lombardy during the Roman era. They were the result of the fusion of pre-existing Ligurian and Celtic population with Gaulish tribes, and, in the 7th century BC, they became the first tribe to inhabit Cisalpine Gaul. In 225 BC, the Insubres and Boii rebelled against the Roman Republic, and the Insubres allied with Carthage during the Punic Wars. In 194 BC, the Insubres formed an alliance with Rome, and they became Latin citizens in 89 BC and Roman citizens in 49 BC. They were quickly Romanized due to the presence of Roman colonies.
