The Republic of Ingushetia is a federal subject of Russia in the North Caucasus, with Magas serving as its capital. The region was inhabited by the Ingushes, and Ingushetia "voluntarily" joined the Russian Empire in 1810 after signing a treaty with the Imperial Russian Army. The region became a part of the Chechen-Ingush ASSR during Soviet rule, and the Ingushes waged an insurgency against the USSR from 1944 to 1977. Scores of Soviet Army units and NKVD and KGB officers were killed in the insurgency. The modern republic was created on 4 June 1992 after the Dissolution of the Soviet Union, and the insurgency in the North Caucasus led to Ingushetia becoming one of the poorest and most unstable regions of Russia; the insurgency in Chechnya occasionally spilled over into Ingushetia. In 2010, Ingushetia had a population of 412,529 people.
