Ingrid Webster

Ingrid Webster was an Irish Volunteers medic during the 1916 Easter Rising.

Biography[]

Ingrid Webster was born in Belfast, County Down, Ireland to an Anglo-Irish Protestant family. In 1916, after her father decided to have her marry her cousin, she decided to elope with her lover George Wilson in Dublin. However, she arrived on 24 April 1916 and witnessed the start of the Easter Rising at the General Post Office while taking a taxi to Trinity College. She later sought shelter at Trinity Chapel while waiting for her lover, and she only briefly greeted him before he left. She met Elizabeth Butler after she went to the church to take care of the wounded, and, while Webster said that her parents told her that socialists were "of the Devil", she volunteered to help Butler care for the wounded after they discussed their shared romantic woes. Ultimately, she was sent to take care of James Connolly in British captivity, and, in May 1916, she ended her relationship with Wilson as he returned to Belfast, as Webster had decided that Wilson cared more about the law than he cared about her.
