Inge the Elder

Inge the Elder (8 January 1050-8 January 1100) was King of Sweden from 1 December 1080 to 8 January 1100, succeeding Hakan the Red and preceding Philip of Sweden.

Biography[]

Inge was born on 8 January 1050, a son of Stenkil and the brother of Eric Stenkilsson, Eric the Heathen, Halsten Stenkilsson, and Hakan the Red. He succeeded his brother Hakan as King of Sweden in 1080, and he was briefly ousted from power by pagans who were angered about his direspect for old Swedish traditions such as refusing to administer the blot. However, he killed the usurper Blot-Sweyn and reclaimed the throne, and he reigned until his death in 1100.
