Inge I of Norway

Inge I Crouchback of Norway (1135-5 January 1161) was King of Norway from 21 August 1157 to 5 January 1161, succeeding Eystein II and preceding Haakon II.

Biography[]

Inge Haraldsson was born in 1135, the son of King Harald Gille and Ingrid Ragnvaldsdotter, and the brother of Sigurd and Eystein. He was nicknamed "Crouchback" for his hunchback, and he murdered his brothers Sigurd in 1155 and Eystein in 1157 in order to become the sole ruler of Norway. However, his brothers' supporters united behind Sigurd's young son, Haakon, and they defeated and killed Inge in battle at Oslo in 1161.
