Ines Bermudez (1955-) was Prime Minister of Spain from 2019, succeeding Ines LaRiva.

Biography[]

Ines Bermudez was born in Coslada, a suburb of Madrid, Spain, in 1955. She was a member of the Falange party during her youth before becoming a People's Party of Spain politician in the Community of Madrid. In 2014, she was finally elected to the Congress of Deputies, and, in 2019, she became party leader a week after Prime Minister Ines LaRiva - upset by poor election results - decided to step down as PP leader. Two weeks later, Bermudez won the support of 23 deputies (mostly from Podemos, PSOE, and her own party) to form a new government, defeating Ciudadanos leader Alejandro Riveros and his 16 votes.

Premiership[]

Bermudez continued her predecessor's moderate economic policies, abstaining from a vote on road maintenance which resulted in a 23-10 decision to abolish it. She also prioritized infrastructure over education, and her party successfully opposed a Podemos and Ciudadanos-backed bill to legalize gambling, which was shot down 19-11. Her government also opposed the reimplementation of public housing, defeating it in a narrow vote of 18-17 with 5 key abstentions. Bermudez also supported the monarchy, defeating an attempt to abolish the monarchy in a vote of 29-10.
