Indianapolis is the capital and most populous city of the US state of Indiana. The city was founded in 1821 as a planned city for the new seat of the state government, and it became a manufacturing and transportation hub after the completion of the National Road and the railroad; it became nicknamed "the Crossroads of America". The city's economics came to be based primarily on finance, insurance, manufacturing, professional and business services, education, health care, government, and wholesale trade, with amateur sports and auto racing becoming niche markets in the city. In 2016, the Indianapolis metro area had a population of 2,004,230 people, with 58.6% being white, 27.9% African-American, 9.6% Hispanic, and 2.4% Asian.
