The Indian Territory was an unorganized territory of the United States that existed from 1834 to 1907, occupying the lands of what is now the state of Oklahoma. The territory was used to house the Native American tribes that were displaced from their homes by the US Army as a result of the Indian Removal Act and the "Trail of Tears", but in 1907 the territory was admitted to the union as the 46th state as "Oklahoma" after the Native American lands were stripped from them by "allotment" and given to private landowners.
