The Independent Democratic Union (UDI) is a conservative political party in Chile that was founded in 1983. The party was founded by Jaime Guzman, a civilian collaborator with Augusto Pinochet's military dictatorship; Guzman was a senator from 1990 until his 1991 assassination by the Manuel Rodriguez Patriotic Front. The party supported several of Pinochet's views, including social conservatism, nationalism, and neoliberal economics, and it was the most significant right-wing political party in the country. The UDI allied with the National Renewal party to win the 2010 presidential election, defeating the leftist Nueva Mayoria coalition. In 2017, the UDI had 29/120 Chamber of Deputies seats, 8/38 Senate, 46/278 regional board seats, 60/345 mayoral seats, and 352/2,224 communal council seats.
