Independence Rock is a 130-foot-tall granite rock in Natrona County, Wyoming. On 1 August 1843, American explorer John C. Fremont camped at the rock and named it "Independence Rock", as he had hoped to reach it by 4 July. It became one of the major landmarks along the Oregon Trail after 1848.
