Biography[]
Inaba Masakuni was born in Edo (Tokyo), Japan on 26 July 1834, the brother of Inaba Masatsune, and he came to serve as daimyo of the Yodo Domain from 1848 to 1871 under the Tokugawa Shogunate. He served as the Shogun's shoshidai (representative) in Kyoto from 26 July 1863 to 16 May 1864, and, while he was a supporter of the pro-Shogunate cause early in the war, he refused to allow the pro-Shogunate forces into Yodo during the Battle of Toba-Fushimi in 1868, enabling the Satsuma Domain and Choshu Domain to defeat the Shogunate's army. He continued to serve as a Viscount under Emperor Meiji and as a Shinto priest and government official, and he died in 1898 at the age of 63.
