The Imperial Russian Navy was the navy of the Russian Empire from 1696 to 1917, growing out of the small naval force assembled by King Peter the Great of Russia for the Azov campaign in the 1690s. The navy rapidly grew in size during the early 1800s, and it was the third-largest navy, after the United Kingdom's Royal Navy and France's French Navy. Most of the navy's Pacific fleet was destroyed during the Russo-Japanese War, and the navy fought amongst itself during the Russian Revolution of 1917 after the overthrow of the czarist regime. The navy became a part of the Soviet Union's navy after the revolution.
