The Imperial Diet was the general assembly of the Holy Roman Empire from 806 to 1806, existing for exactly 1,000 years. The tradition of the Diet originated with the Franks, and Emperor Charlemagne would hold the first Imperial Diet meeting in 806 at Diedenhofen, where his empire was divided between Pepin of Italy, Charles the Younger, and Louis the Pious. The various estates of the realm assembled at diets in the following centuries, and a perpetual diet was seated at Regensburg from 1663 to 1806, ensuring that a permanent parliament had been established. The Imperial Diet was dissolved in 1806 when the empire collapsed.
