The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 was an act passed by the US Congress on 3 October 1965. The bill ended restrictions on immigration from Asia, Southern Europe, and Eastern Europe, ending the National Origins Formula and allowing for larger numbers of non-whites to immigrate to the United States. The white population decreased by 10% by the 1980s as non-white immigration increased the white birth rate declined, and it was later estimated that non-whites would make up the majority of the population by 2043. The act's effects would lead to an upsurge in white nationalism and white supremacism, as an increasingly diverse America experienced heightened racial tensions.
