Illyricum was a province of the Roman Empire which existed from 27 BC to 79 AD. Illyria had been conquered by the Roman Republic in 168 BC, but Octavian had to subdue the Iapyges, Pannonians, and Dalmatians from 35 to 33 BC before, as Emperor Augustus, he created the province in 27 BC. Illyricum stretched from the Sava River and Istria in the north to the Drin River in the south, and it included northern Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and coastal Croatia. Emperor Vespasian divided Illyricum into Dalmatia and Pannonia before his death in 79 AD.
