Illyria was a region in the western Balkans inhabited over time by the Illyrians, Celts, Goths, and Thracians. Divided among several tribes, Illyria was united as a kingdom by 400 BC, with the powerful Ardiaei kingdom lasting from 230 to 167 BC. The Roman Republic conquered the region in 168 BC, defeating their king Gentius at Scodra and bringing him to Rome in 165 BC. The Romans replaced Illyria with their province of Illyricum.
