The Ikhshidids were a mamluk dynasty who ruled over Egypt from 935 to 969, with Fustat serving as their capital. Muhammad ibn Tughj al-Ikhshid, the Abbasid Governor of Egypt, broke free of Abbasid rule in 935 and later conquered Syria, ultimately making peace with the Abbasids. However, the Ikhshidids became rivals with the Fatimids, whose army conquered Fustat in 969 and established the Fatimid Caliphate.
