Idlib Governorate is one of the fourteen governorates of Syria, located on the border with Turkey in the northwest of the country. In 2010, the province had a population of 1,464,000 people, mostly Muslim Arabs, and its capital is Idlib; there are four other districts in the governorate, namely Harem, Jisr ash-Shugur, Arihah, and Ma'arat al-Numan. Idlib was a major battleground during the Syrian Civil War, with rebel groups such as the al-Nusra Front, Ahrar ash-Sham, and other Islamist Army of Conquest groups ruling almost all of the province from the capital of Idlib.
