The Ibibio are a West African people from southeast Nigeria. The animist Ibibio people were converted to Christianity by European missionaries at the end of the 19th century, and they were recognized as a sovereign nation by the British. In 2017, the Ibibio world population was around 5,000,000, with 4,482,000 living in Nigeria, 46,000 in Ghana, 39,000 in Cameroon, and 2,700 in Equatorial Guinea.
