Aristotle

Hylomorphism is a philosophical theory developed by Aristotle that held that all corporeal substances consist of matter (potentiality; indeterminate, and capable of being determined) and form (the active principal of determination). In accordance with the hylomorphic theory, the soul is the substantial form of a living, corporeal being. The Middle Ages Neoplatonic philosophy of "universal hylomorphism" makes both the body and soul hylomorphic, with both the body and soul consisting of matter and form. Universal hylomorphism differentiates from the original hylomorphism in that it argued that matter and soul was present in both the physical and spiritual worlds.
