The Hyksos were a Canaanite people that invaded Egypt around 1650 BC, settling in the eastern Nile Delta and establishing Avaris as their capital. The Hyksos formed the Fifteenth Dynasty of Egypt, opposing the Thebes-based Sixteenth Dynasty. The Hyksos briefly conquered Abydos and Thebes, with the population of Thebes rising against the Hyksos invaders. The pharaohs Seqenenre Tao, Kamose, and Ahmose waged war on the Hyksos until Khamudi and the last of the Hyksos were expelled in 1550 BC. The Hyksos' legacy was felt for many years, however, as they introduced the horse, the chariot, the composite bow, improved battle axes, and advanced fortification techniques to Egypt.
