The site of the Hyde Park bombing
The Hyde Park and Regent's Park bombings occurred on 20 July 1982 when the Provisional IRA used gelignite bombs to attack two parks in central London, England during The Troubles. A nail bomb exploded in a Morris Marina family car parked on South Carriage Drive in Hyde Park as the Household Cavalry bodyguard regiment passed by, and four soldiers were killed in that bombing; seven horses died. Another bomb exploded under a bandstand in Regent's Park as members of the Royal Green Jackets' bandsmen performed music from the play Oliver, killing seven bandsmen. A total of 11 people were killed in the attacks, while 50 were wounded; the attacks led to the IRA losing its popularity in the United States, and the attacks were condemned by British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
