Hussein Onn (12 February 1922-29 May 1990) was Prime Minister of Malaysia from 15 January 1976 to 16 July 1981, succeeding Abdul Razak Hussein and preceding Mahathir Mohamad.
Biography[]
Hussein Onn was born in Johor Bahru, Malaya in 1922, and he served in the British Indian Army in the Middle East during World War II before returning home and becoming a civil servant. He became UMNO's first youth chief in 1949 and became secretary-general in 1951, only to leave UMNO in 1951 to form the multiculturalist Independence of Malaya Party. He studied law in London before returning to Malaysia and rejoining UMNO in 1968, after which he served as Education Minister. He became Prime Minister of Abdul Razak Hussein's death in 1976, and he himself resigned in 1981 due to health concerns. He died in 1990.
