The Hurrians were a Bronze Age people who inhabited Anatolia and northern Mesopotamia. The Hurrians formed kingdoms such as Mitanni and the Nairi, and the Hurrians spoke an isolated language, although they adopted Assyrian cuneiform in 2000 BC. By the 13th century BC, the Hurrian states had been destroyed by other kingdoms, with Mitanni being conquered by the Middle Assyrian Empire. The Nairi formed the new kingdom of Urartu, which became rivals with the energetic Neo-Assyrian Empire during the 10th century BC. During the 7th century Bc, Urartu was fully conquered by the Assyrians. After the fall of Assyria, the Hurrians came under the Medes and then the Persians' rule, and, in the 6th century BC, the Armenian Orontid dynasty absorbed the region. The Hurri-Urartians eventually absorbed into the Indo-European Armenian population.
