Humam Khalil al-Balawi (25 December 1977-30 December 2009) was a Jordanian doctor affiliated with Al-Qaeda. al-Balawi was a double agent of the Jordanian government and al-Qaeda, and he was the suicide bomber who carried out the Camp Chapman attack in 2009.

Biography[]

Balawi

Balawi before his death

Humam Khalil al-Balawi was from Kuwait but at the age of thirteen he moved to Jordan, and became a doctor after studies in Jordan and Turkey. He had a history of supporting Islamist groups, and joined Al-Qaeda. In 2009, having been vouched for by Jordan's GID, he was taken in by the CIA as an informant against Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Death[]

Al-Balawi was a double agent; having been trusted by the Americans, he was let into the meeting place of Camp Chapman (near Khost, Afghanistan) unchecked. However, he had a deadly car bomb, and he used a cane to make it appear that he had a limp. He exited his car with his hand in his pocket, and when the soldiers demanded that he take his hand out, he detonated the bomb that killed 9 people (and himself) and wounded 6.
